13 Vintage Ads That Would Be Banned Today
I actually found these Ads through a Mad Men fansite, but I thought they were relevant to our readings in Imperial Leather. Most of the examples are incredibly misogynistic and promote the idea of a wife submitting to her husband. Interestingly, the same advertisement for Chlorinol is included on the website as is shown in Imperial Leather (fig. 5.7).
Edit:
Just found this and couldn’t resist adding it!
Thank you for this post… the ads are fascinating!

I think it’s fascinating how advertising seem to bring out the worst in us. Advertisements attempt to appeal to us on a visceral level and even if what is produced resonates with consumers of the time, there’s no guarantee that it will later. By pushing boundaries of the day ads were made eye catching to consumers, but they end up looking totally shameless to us. For example, what will our grandchildren think of this 2008 advertisement? http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gawker/2009/06/BKsevenincher.jpg The text suggests “that you fill your desire for something long, juicy and flame-grilled with the NEW BK SUPER SEVEN INCHER.” This isn’t going to get any classier with time.
For some truly terrible vintage ads I’d suggest http://myvintagevogue.com/advertisements. No one was more afraid of crows feet or nylon runs than a Vogue Housewife. And for a more in depth discussion on masculinity within modern day advertisements try: http://www.heartlessdoll.com/2010/02/ads_gone_bad_super_bowl_super_misogyny.php.
